Hello street dancers! Welcome to Åsa Folk High School, since 2004 home to one of Europe’s leading and most renowned dance programs.
On this site, we have compiled all the essential information you need about Åsa’s dance courses and the school that’s on most every young street dancer’s lips.
This is also where you can apply for our course programs.
About the courses
Five Styles: a forward-looking course for you who want to elevate your dance skills. In Five Styles, you’ll study alongside other passionate street dancers, are taught by skilled instructors, and explore the styles of locking, house, hip-hop, popping, and breaking.
Throughout the course, we aim for your development as a dancer, both individually and alongside your classmates. The course also seeks to deepen your understanding of the history and culture associated with these five dance styles.

One Style: a specialized course designed for you who hunger for valuable experiences and is ready to dedicate a full year to pursue your goals.
The course offers the opportunity to learn alongside a dynamic and skilled dance group, experimenting and exploring street dance through freestyling. Its main aim is to build strong individual dance skills, emphasising both foundational techniques and freestyle ability as essential keys.
Throughout the year, you’ll have many opportunities to develop your own dance style by collaborating in small groups and studying various subjects such as history, dance technique, and culture.

Important to know: all dance course instructions are free of charge, but there is a material fee of 500 SEK per semester.
Unlike any other school
Åsa Folk High School is nestled in the woods of Sörmland, and has been active since 1872 (!). It has over 200 students taking various courses.
The school is politically and religiously independent. It is run by Region Sörmland, which determines the direction of activities.
Attending a folk high school is unlike attending any other school. Here, you study according to your own experiences and circumstances, in an environment that prioritizes dialogue, discussions, and democratic influence.
You are given ample opportunities to influence your education, your life, and your society.
Diversity is an asset
At Åsa, we believe in community. Community is created in encounters: between people from different cultures and backgrounds, people with different interests and goals. To us, diversity is a great asset!
We strive to create an open and democratic environment where everyone has the opportunity to express themselves and grow. For instance, you can participate in influencing the school and your studies through class and school councils.
Stop! Pause! Read!
For a school to function, there must be a common understanding of certain fundamental issues. In Åsa’s Manifesto, you can learn where the school stands on important issues, and what we want you to gain from your study time.
Download the Manifesto here.
Another important document is the Student Legal Standard. It applies to all who attend a course longer than 15 days. The document describes your rights and obligations, as well as the school’s responsibility to inform you about such matters. Download the PDF here.
A drug-free school
At Åsa, we have zero tolerance for drugs. If there is reasonable suspicion of drug use, we will request a urine test. If the test is positive, or if you refuse to take it, you will be immediately dismissed from your studies and banned from school during the current academic year.
The working week at Åsa is alcohol-free. All consumption of alcohol in the school’s common areas is prohibited. Smoking is allowed in designated outdoor areas.
Download the school’s action plan against drugs here.
Living and dining at Åsa
Your study experience at Åsa will become even more special by living at our boarding school. This is a choice made by the vast majority of street dance students, whether they come from abroad or are Swedish.
You can find all information about the boarding school here. Check out Åsa’s restaurant here.
Special needs
As a student at Åsa, you are insured against accidents through the school’s main organization, Region Sörmland.
Course participants with special needs have the opportunity to receive aid to help them with their studies. The facilities are largely adapted for people with physical disabilities.
The school has a counselor and a dedicated staff team that can support you if you are experiencing mental health issues. You can find more information about where to turn via this link.
