A motion is a formal proposal submitted for decision within an organisation, for example Åsa’s School Council, an association, a municipal council, or the Swedish parliament.
The proposal may be raised by you as a course participant or staff member at the school. You may submit the proposal individually or together with others from your course or work team. The motion must be submitted in writing to the School Council via your council representative.
The motion should be emailed to skolradet@asafolkhogskola.se no later than 14 days before the next meeting.
When writing a motion, it is important to be clear about the background, purpose, proposal, and reasoning. Below you will find an example of a general structure for a motion. It can be adapted depending on the nature of the proposal.
Motion for the installation of a bicycle parking area at Åsa Folk High School
To: The School Council
Date: 2025-XX-XX
Proposer(s): Your name(s)
(Here you provide background or an explanation of the proposal)
As more students and staff use bicycles as their main means of transport to meetings and activities, it has become evident that there is a lack of secure and suitable bicycle parking at the school. At present, bicycles must be left in less secure places, which poses safety issues and increases the risk of theft.
(Here you describe the purpose of the proposal)
The purpose of this motion is to urge the school to install a bicycle parking area in order to promote sustainable travel and improve safety for those who cycle to school.
(And now, to the actual proposal!)
PROPOSAL
We propose that the School Council should:
- Install a bicycle parking area with space for at least ten bicycles near the school’s main entrance.
- Investigate possible grants or financial support from the property owner to help fund the bicycle parking area.
- Assess the cost of this and request funds from the School Council.
(Here you justify the proposal)
A bicycle parking area would not only improve safety for cyclists but also encourage more people at the school to use an environmentally friendly and healthy mode of transport. In addition, it would reduce congestion around the entrance area, where bicycles are often parked haphazardly at present.
(To conclude the motion)
We hope that the council will take this proposal into consideration and discuss it at the next meeting. By installing a bicycle parking area, the school would contribute to a safer and more environmentally friendly environment.
